Birth Story: Adrienne T.
Baby’s Birth Date: August 26, 2006
Our daughter Paola Helene was born at 5:10 on a Monday morning.
I began my pregnancy terrified to tears with fear of birth (cue every Hollywood portrayal of women screaming). So I started researching. I read everything I could get my hands on and, wow, what an education. From Michel Odent’s “Childbirth Without Fear” to Ina May Gaskin’s “Spiritual Midwifery,” I came to a new understanding of what the potential was for birth. I picked up a Hypnobirthing book, then took the full day course with my husband.
My birth turned out just as I had read it could be and certainly as I hoped it would be. At home, with a midwife, the shortest she had experienced for a first time mother. Truly, the more relaxed you can keep yourself by focusing on opening, opening and letting go, not resisting, the more endorphins you get. I don’t refer to birth as painful, but powerful and intense. It’s the snowball effect in a positive sense. The high I experienced after birth had me sailing for days and even retelling the story now brings on a high.
The beauty of home birth was tremendous… I labored in my hot tub under a star studded sky and made the “o” sound Ina May recommends, even saying out loud “open.” I felt so free to do whatever I needed to do. The midwife and her assistant, along with my doula, took such excellent care of me, my baby and my husband.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this film!! It has been very painful for me to realize how many families are being robbed of such a life transforming and empowering opportunity. A gentler world begins with a gentler birth…
