Should I wait until 42 weeks for non-stress test?

Q: Thank you for taking my question. I am 4 days past my “due date” and my midwife has scheduled me for a non stress test to make sure the baby is OK. Should I wait until I’m 42 weeks to have this test performed? I feel like they are just looking for something to be wrong so they have a reason to
induce me.

I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Christy

A: Dear Christy, Post-dates protocols very from practice to practice. In our office, unless a woman has certain other factors that may make her at higher risk, we do not usually do the first non-stress test until 41 weeks. We do not, however, wait until 42 weeks. Usually we also check the amniotic fluid by ultrasound at 41 1/2 weeks. Talk over the plan of care with your midwife. Trust and open communication are perhaps the most important elements in your relationship with her.

Best wishes,
