How do I become a midwife?

Q: I am very interested in taking the route to becoming a midwife. Right now I have two young children so I know I won’t be able to do it until they are a little older. However, what can I do now to ready myself for this path? What about being a birth assistant or doula? This is my passion and what I know I am meant to do, so I would love any advice! Thank you.

From Mandy

A: Dear Mandy, Congratulations on your calling to become a midwife. People say
you don’t find this “job”, it finds you! Midwives are talented and gifted professionals.
There are many paths in becoming a midwife as far as credentials and training. I recommend you read “Mainstreaming Midwives” by the talented Robbie Davis-Floyd and Christine B Johnson. There is also a wonderful publication by Midwifery Today called “Paths to Becoming a Midwife: Getting an Education”.

As far as becoming a doula or assisting a midwife, this can definitely be a great way to get your feet wet but remember for these jobs you need to be “on call” and with children you will need a support system of your own.

Good Luck on your journey, we certainly need more midwives!
